It was time. It was late-summer of 2003 when I started looking. In the twenty plus years previous, living in a series of apartments and a condo, I didn't feel there was a place for a dog to live happily. I had owned a number of cats but no dogs. I finally owned a house with a yard. It was time to add a dog to my circle of four-legged friends.

So, I began to search the Internet. After scanning through the various local animal shelter sites I happened upon a wonderful site, petfinder.com. Fortunately, I knew precisely what sort of pooch I wanted: a mellow, laid-back dog (like a Basset Hound or Bull Dog) with a sweet personality who would be my best buddy and sidekick, an affectionate dog who would enjoy riding in my car. So, I proceeded to enter my search criteria on petfinder.com: "young", "canine", "Basset Hound", "medium-size", "within 100 miles" and came up with,  a few pages of matches. I scanned the ads first, then more carefully, imagining each of the dogs running around in my back yard, riding in my car, licking me with dog kisses. I bookmarked my search and, over the next few weeks, went back over the possibilities. I kept going back to this one fellow, "Barley." There was just something about this Basset-mix poochie ... could he really be mine?
